The book tells the story of a girl's struggle for freedom and happiness growing up within a strict family in a Moslem country (Turkey). We vividly experience her tremendous frustration as she fights to have a normal childhood while at the same time trying to satisfy the demands of her neurotic and work-obsessed parents. From the first page, the reader begins to identify with the little Aysha and feels the pain in her young heart. As she grows, we accompany her through various traumas (abuse, neglect and harassment, a first relationship and separation), until her escape (aged 27) from her social and psychological confines. Despite often plumbing the depths of despair, she never loses her sense of hope and determination that she will one day find freedom and happiness.Offering insight into how our experiences as children shape who we are today, it is in a sense a self-help book. The emotions that Aysha expresses are universal and will strike a chord with many people, particularly women.

I bought this because I'm interested in women's self-empowerment, and right from the first page, the sad but determined character of little 7-year-old Aysha struck a chord with me, maybe due to my own somewhat lonely childhood. I could really relate to her young mind struggling to come to terms with the way certain ignorant adults around her behave, and how this harsh upbringing gradually shapes her development into an adult with issues.

Growing up in a small and conservative town somewhere in Turkey, tomboy Aysha just wants to have fun playing football and hanging out with boys her age, but her parents make huge demands on her. She wants to 'be a good girl' and please them but is also desperate to live her own life, and it is this impossible balancing act which forms the central theme of the book.

Forced to practically be a housewife from the age of eight, she goes through the humiliation of being dragged away from a game of football and beaten, being sexually abused by an older male cousin and then being blamed for it by her heartless mother, being stalked by a gun-wielding suitor amid civil war... the list of indignities she suffers goes on and on. She gets temporary respite when she moves to the city and begins to shape a new life for herself, but it's not long before her mother is again trying to control (ruin?) her life by restricting her social life, planning an arranged marriage for her, etc.. Eventually, after her first serious (but abusive) relationship fails, she manages to escape abroad to try to gain control of her own destiny for once and for all

It's written in a no-nonsense stream-of-consciousness style that's gets across her confusion well and really takes the empathic reader into her frame of reference. If you want frilly writing and romance, it's maybe not for you, but if you're prepared to face up to the serious issues that many of us harbor within us as a result of our childhood experiences, then give it a go. Like me, you might find it enlightening, moving and even inspiring!
