An illustrated history of the first 26 years of the author’s life. Against a light historical canvas, the author, born in 1926, depicts the unique pre-war lifestyle of the Polish landed gentry; he proceeds with the narrative of the German invasion, expulsion from home and rescue by Italian relatives. There follow years of a refugee’s life in German occupied France, a risky escape over the Pyrenees to Spain, then further to Gibraltar and Algeria. Then follows military training in the Polish army in Scotland, when the war finally ends. A Soviet imposed regime in Poland precludes a safe return home. This marks the beginning of an entirely new life in England, starting from nothing. This marks the end of the story of the author's youth. Thirty pages of illustrations help bring the reader closer to this story, the record of a world, which had "Gone With The War". The epilogue sketches the subsequent 61 years of his private and professional life.

We read a lot about the soldiers who fought in WW2. But this is a story of a young boy whose entire way of live was obliterated by the Germans. And the tale of how he and his father escaped from Poland by crossing Europe on foot. For me, this was a kind of insight into the lives of rural aristocrats depicted in the great Russian novels. Brodnicki had tutors on the remote estate and visited other estates by carriage. Then the Germans took everything, and then the communist state. Today the former farms and country home are a government agricultural research station.
The author is a testament to standards of manners and education we will never see again. He speaks five languages fluently, now living in Switzerland. I learned more about the early 20th century from reading this book than from any history. The writing flows easily and one develops a personal interest in this true life adventure.
