I have to say that I was surprised by this book. I bought it thinking it would be a quick, but interesting young adult novel. It was much more. The descriptions were vivid scenes painted in true colorful detail on each page. When Punzel was in the hospital, I could smell, as well as see her dated antiseptic room.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it tragic but magical at the same time. There were moments when I was queasy, moments when I laughed and others still that were quite sad and empty. Themes of (in)stability and mental illness combined with childhood fantasy were delicately balanced with the rugged reality of the greatness of nature. It is not an easy book to swallow and one that will stick with you for some time after finishing.
I read this book months ago and am still thinking about it. The weirdness of the situation is both overt and subtle; though the whole situation is strange, the real horror of it sneaks up on you. The ending was shocking but not surprising -- I didn't see it coming but in thinking back over the story there were clues. Fuller really captures the sense of trust and helplessness of being a child dependent on a possibly unhinged parent. Really looking forward to more by this new writer.
This was a good book. I found it unsettling, and felt at one point that I would walk away from it with the abusive nature of the father. But I stuck it out and waded through the unclear perception of the girl until she escaped and came back to reality. It switched back and forth between "then" and "now," which added to the off-kilter perception of the novel. I am intrigued by "survivalists" but this was mostly on the side of crazy rather than pragmatic or well-thought out survival.
Well this was not at all the book I expected, but it was very intriguing. I couldn't we hit 'reading the last few chapters because I wanted so much to know what had happened. Not an easy story, a complicated one about human beings and their unbelievable ability to cope...
To Claire Fuller's credit, Our Endless Numbered Days resists classification. Post-apocalyptic fiction? Only superficially. YA novel? Not really. Chick lit? Not at all. I'm an old guy who was quickly drawn in by Fuller's sharp uncluttered prose, keen sense of place, and sympathetic portrayal of the protagonist.
Seldom have I read such a haunting novel. This richly drawn story is about a myriad of human behaviors parenting, friendship and fear-driven worldviews, among other things. A young girl is wrenched by her father from a comfortable London life to harsh primitive circumstances, where she spends nearly a decade believing that a global apocalypse has destroyed the rest of the world. Ultimately, Peggy finds the strength to assert herself and venture into whatever she believes remains of the outside world; but not before suffering through years of deprivation and the gradual emotional breakdown of her father. I highly recommend this book.
Headline
This is a gorgeously written story that starts out quietly, but takes a suspenseful turn and will leave you dying to talk to it over with someone…making it a perfect book club selection. I’m also adding it to my 2015 Summer Reading List.

Why I Read It
A couple bloggers who have steered me to great places before (Leah at Books Speak Volumes and Allison at The Book Wheel) raved about it.

What I Loved
- Our Endless Numbered Days starts out as a somewhat quiet story, but gets incredibly suspenseful during the second half (or so). I stayed up way too late finishing the final third in one night.
- Fuller tells the story through the perspective of Peggy looking back on her time in the woods intermixed with chapters following her return to London. I loved this choice because, during the quieter beginning of the book, Peggy drops hints about certain things that should have alerted her to danger at the time. This gives the story a deliciously ominous feel right from the beginning.
- What kicked this book from a “really like” to a “love” for me was that the story made me take the same set of puzzle pieces it started with and look at them from a completely different perspective by the end.
- The writing is gorgeous…especially when Fuller describes mundane things in the woods in a way that makes life there seem a bit magical
"In the middle, the river was a deep green, scattered with rocks poking their noses up for a breath. The water charged around them, creating eddies and whirlpools. Closer to the bank, the current dragged lengths of weed along with it so it seemed that long-haired women swam just under the surface, never coming up for air."

What I Didn’t Like
I honestly couldn’t come up with something I didn’t like about this book, but I do think the official marketing blurb includes way too much information (so maybe steer clear if you think you want to read it and like going in blind!). Sadly, I’ve been feeling this way about more and more books lately.
