Boy, this series is smokin' hot. I've loved all the books. The characters are usually well defined, and accessible without being a total fantasy. It's a fine line, and Ms. Carter does it well. And the sex is great.I do have a couple of bones to pick on this one, though. SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Rynn's character was amazing. Very full, with good underlying issues that are quite understandable. His somewhat cheap treatment of Jac once they got planet-side seemed a little too strong to me. Confused about his role in her life?--sure thing. Use her like a booty call?--not so cool. It seemed disrespectful and not in line with the other stories.
Jac...her character just seemed to fade away once they got on the ship. She reacted, sure. But she reacted strangely. And why didn't she hold Rynn more accountable? Had he been more forthcoming, she might not have acted as she did. But my biggest beef was her behavior once they made the planet. To accept the continued "visits" with no response from Rynn was just a wet noodle. It made her character appear seriously stereotyped, like she had no definition without a man. All the other female characters were much stronger as written. Sure, Jac wasn't a soldier as were the others. But she shouldn't have been portrayed as such a hollow character. She started out with promise, but she acquiesced without need very suddenly. She seemed listless, and without a core. That was disappointing.
Other issues: There was a decided lack of interaction with the other characters as well, that I found sad. Jac only really spoke with Jess. Why? And why no mention of Lizzie again after she got loaded on the ship like a piece of nearly forgotten luggage? Hopefully she'll get her story with Daaynal. Still, she was such an afterthought when she was the reason for the trip. And what's up with Xaan and Kenna? Barely a smidge on them, either. We would have at least appreciated a teaser or two.
Overall, the story was good, and fitting with the series. I want more, though! Bring on Kenna and Xaan! And Lizzie and Daaynal! And I am begging....don't turn this series into just another Pregnancy Depot. Yes, I get that they are propagating the race, but don't fall back on that trope in lieu of a real story with real characters. (Please forgive my spelling mistakes!)

This was a pretty good story. I probably like some of the others in the series better, but I'm glad I read it. There were a couple loose ends that didn't get resolved (or at least mentioned again), which kind of bothered me. After their arrival on his planet, Jessica's sister, who Rynn went to retrieve, is not really mentioned again. Neither is Jessica's mother. I realize this is probably because their story will be resolved in the next book, but it would have been nice if the author had written a couple of sentences confirming that her sister made it to the planet at least, and that her mother was picked up and brought to the planet by the other Latharian ship that was in charge of cleaning up after the assault on their house.
A couple of other reviewers said they didn't like Jac's character because she seemed to not be that interested in Jessica's sister's survival, but the way I read it, it had less to do with that and more to do with the fact that the author just stopped talking about the other characters after they arrived on the planet. Because at the beginning of the book, she's very concerned about Jessica's sister and mother (to the point of being willing to fight Rynn over them) and it just seemed like the part of the storyline that had to do with them just got "forgotten" in the end. So not really a personality flaw on the heroine's part.
Had some trouble with this book and frankly the series.
I know the Lather have no females and they are just trying to survive, but I really have a problem with sexual subjugation. The Oonat are described as passive bovine like people and the Lather use them sexually to procreate but really care nothing for them. As a human woman, I would have problems respecting a man/race who did that and honestly if these oonat females really are more animal than people, then I doubly have problems with it. I would not want to be with a guy who was born from a cow or a guy who boinked a cow! It would disgust me. I’m sorry that’s just me. If that’s what you have to do to survive as a race (boink cows and father children with them) then maybe your race needs to die out! Maybe the “universe” is telling the Lather something we don’t LIKE you.
I've enjoyed all of the Lathar series until this book. Basically the H treats her like crap and just has sex with Jac, even admitting that he's angry at her and mistrusts her. Then suddenly, after spending no time together other than in the dark between the sheets, they're madly in love with each other and just need a small nudge to get them to admit it to each other 🙄 I'm all for insta-love but NOT after the H has used the h for physical pleasure and treated her like crap, not even speaking to her sometimes and yelling at her others. Seems like Jac has a type because her former boyfriend was abusive Too. I guess because this time it's not physical abuse she doesn't realize how badly she's being treated?! Really disappointed and hoping the next book has more of a connection between characters. Giving it 2 stars simply for the editing and clarity of writing.
I loved her other heroes and heroines but I couldn't warm up to jac. she attacked him from behind, surely something an honorable warrior would not forgive. she caused the death of his beloved ai with no guilt at all. she seemed unconcerned about Jessica's sister or the possibility of a race's extinction.
maybe I'm reading her wrong but she just irritated me.
