The Black Dagger Brotherhood An Insider Guide JR Ward 9780451225009 Books

I love the series and I was hoping to get more insight into all of the characters, not just the brothers. For example-I want to know what some of the words of the old language mean (ie mayhap) What about a map of the brotherhood mansion and training center? Maybe powers and limitations of the different races. I still have no idea what sillasiz (sp) are that Xhex wears. I’d like to see interviews with other characters, but I don’t want to have to flip through a thousand pages to look for someone specific, each person should be in the table of contents. People who aren’t writers don’t care about tips for writers. If you want to write an instructional or advice book, make it separate from your insiders guide. I wish I had my $13 back.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood An Insider Guide JR Ward 9780451225009 Books Reviews

I got bored and have not finished it. A lot of "about me" from J.R.Ward, complete with dates and times of started, finished, published and the like. Had to skip ahead too much to keep any interest. I did like the interviews with the brothers, though, or I would have given it only 1 star.
The first detail I should share is that this guide was written after the 6th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood was written. So, the books after #6 Phury's story (this would be Rehvenge, John, and Payne's stories), are not included in this Guide. But don't let that keep you from purchasing the Guide... it is a MUST HAVE for any fan of this series.

The book begins with a novella that features more of Zsadist and Bella's story. It starts 3 months after their daughter Nalla is born. Zsadist is having a tough time adjusting to being a Father and Bella is hurt and frustrated with his distance from both her and Nalla. As they work through their marital problems, they grow closer than ever. I LOVE that Ward extended Zsadist's story. To date he is my favorite brother and is the subject of my favorite BDB book. Qhuinn is the only character who has even the slightest potential of eclipsing Z for me, and that will depend entirely on how he makes things right with Blay. In any case, I would read anything that has Z in it, so he was the reason I bought the Guide in the first place. It was worth every penny.

Further on in the Guide we get interviews with each of the characters as well as a synopsis of each character's book from Ward's POV. All of the interviews are fun to read and spot on with how who we know these characers to be. What I personally found the most interesting in this section was that Ward stated that Zsadist was her favorite character and that she had a very tough/challenging relationship with Vishious. The reason this stuck out to me was that Zsadist's book was my most favorite of the series and Vishious's book was my least favorite. What a great insight into how clearly Ward's emotions are portrayed in her writing. Where she felt the most passionate about her characters was where I felt most satisfied as a reader and visa versa. It was the same with all of the characters she discussed.

The Guide continues with a great section for aspiring writers in which Ward gives some awesome tips on how to write your best work AND how to go about getting it published. She even includes her entire submission from Dark Lover, her first book in the series. It is great information for anyone who wants to be a writer.

My next favorite part of the book is the online postings that Ward published from her message board. I didn't know she had a message board!! Darn, I wish I had been reading the thing all along. There were some awesome things in this section including Phury's mating ceremony AND a bunch of stuff about Lassiter that I wish I had read before books 7-9 (his presence in those books would have made more sense to me.)

There is some additional deleted scenes toward the end of the book as well as a copy of the old language alphabet. The book then concludes with a preview of book #7 Rehvenge's story.

I felt like such an insider after reading this book. I really loved it that much. I'm so thankful that Ward took the time to put this together for her readers.

I highly recommend the entire BDB Series INCLUDING this fantastic guide. Keep in mind that it is definitely an adult series due to sexual content and violence.

As a side note
I have not given all of the BDB books the most stellar ratings here on , but honestly it is largely because I'm comparing them to each other more than I'm comparing them to other series. JR Ward is one of my 2 favorite authors and I expect so much from her books that I probably judge her more harshly than others.
'There's an Insider's Guide? Gotta read that!' were my first thoughts when I saw this book existed. I always have so many questions when I start to really like an author and his/her writing What gave you the idea for this? Tell me more about your characters. What were you thinking when you wrote ... scene? Who's your fav? Who's your hardest to write?

Yeah, all those questions and more were answered when I picked up this BDB extra treat. It covers information from the first six books so I definitely recommend reading it after those so spoilers don't hit you.

What does it include? A Zsadist & Bella novella, character interviews, character bios, book discussions from the author, fav quotes, on-line chatting between the brothers, deleted/extended scenes, Brothers interviewing the Warden, and more. Its all written by J.R. Ward and it is done in her wry voice in the most interesting way- the whole thing reads like fiction (almost).

The novella makes the guide worth its weight without the rest. Loved the story told of what happens after Nalla for Zsadist and Bella when 'real' life isn't so Happy Ever After for the couple. But all the other pieces were what answered so many of my questions and it even answered questions that I didn't even know I had. I was so fascinated by getting this unique opportunity that J.R. Ward provided for her fans and readers to get so far inside her head.

I whole-heartily recommend (insist you read) this book of extras for any Black Dagger Brotherhood fan who has cleared their reading to at least book six (Phury's story).
take a peek behind the scenes of the BDB with JR WARD and the Brothers in this book. Learn how she lives with the brothers in her head and how they reveal themselves to her. This book was an eye opener to the way she writes her books.
JR Ward takes you into the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood with her books. She is an excellent writer and draws you in with the characters and settings. You get lost in the world of the brothers and their shelans. Dive right on in anywhere in the series and you will want to start at the beginning and read all about them!
This is one of my 3 top loved series. This book however really was a bit of a let-down as the reader already knows 90+% of this book. It should have had pictures/maps of them and their castle, hospital etc which are stuff we would have soaked up and loved. But putting interviews of you the author with the guys seemed I'll thought out. Had you used another author that would have worked five me and others I know who have read this and tossed it aside in disgust (I can't add mine is kindle format lol). It just didn't work, however the series itself works so well we cry with the characters... Laugh with them... We slip into their world and its beautiful.
I love the series and I was hoping to get more insight into all of the characters, not just the brothers. For example-I want to know what some of the words of the old language mean (ie mayhap) What about a map of the brotherhood mansion and training center?
